Generally covering the strip from the Stratosphere to The M, here are my opinions on the major hotel/casinos on the strip. I have been in all of them and have worked in quite a few.
High Class Joints:
Bellagio
Wynn/Encore
To a slightly lesser extent: Venetian/Palazzo
Good places with great location:
Luxor pyramid tower because all the rooms have big hot tubs in the room
Luxor
Mandalay Bay
New York New York
Paris
Planet Hollywood
Mirage
Aging places with great location:
Treasure Island
Harrahs (beware of homeless and hookers)
Ballys
MGM Grand
Caesars Palace
Great places with non-prime locations:
Palms Place
Red Rock Resort
Aliante Station
Green Valley Ranch
East Side Cannery
Good places with non-prime locations:
South Point
The M Resort
The Rio (at the lower end of "good")
Most of the Station Casinos not mentioned elsewhere
Marginal places to use as a crash pad while you go to other places to party and gamble:
Hooters
Flamingo
Imperial Palace
Bills Gambling Hall
Excaliber
Tropicana
Circus Circus (ONLY if you have kids in tow)
LV Hilton, by the convention center
Places you wouldn't send your worst enemy:
Sahara
Casino Royale
Wild Wild West
Any weekly within 100 miles of the strip
Anything downtown like on Fremont street
I purposely omitted most of the hotels on Boulder Hwy as well as the multiuse timeshares. The timeshares are hit or miss as to quality and amenities and the other hotels on Boulder hwy might be OK, like Sams Town or Boulder Station, but you have a crap neighborhood to deal with. If I was going to stay that far out as a tourist, I would probably pick Sunset Station to the South East or maybe Santa Fe Station to the North West. The room rates are still low plus you have some

Re: Opinions on Various Strip Hotels
Sun, March 29, 2009 - 7:12 PMOh yea I forgot a few.
Monte Carlo- belongs in the Good places with great location category
Hard Rock- is a great out of the way place but in a terrible neighborhood. You walk by the ghetto to get to the strip.
Riviera- like the Sahara, a dump in many respects.
Silverton- Out of the way and a mecca for outdoorsman.
Stratosphere- just north of everything but nice in many ways. Rooms go cheap there for no good reason other than being just a little out of the way.

Sun, March 29, 2009 - 10:10 PMLast time I was in Vegas (about a year ago), the Flamingo was looking like a cool place to stay. Is it just ordinary, or would you speak against it?

Re: Opinions on Various Strip Hotels
Mon, March 30, 2009 - 4:42 AMThe Flamingo is an older hotel that is going to be torn down in a few years. For the money, you can stay in a newer hotel with better rooms. When the economy rebounds, this might not be the case, but it is right now.
Newer hotels have night clubs, much better pool areas and larger rooms often with flat panel TV's as well as better decor. -

Thu, April 9, 2009 - 12:12 PMI dunno, I love the Flamingo Go rooms, they have great decor and flat panel TVs. You're talkin' about their non-renovated rooms. Their pool is pretty awesome and I love their location on the strip. -

Re: Opinions on Various Strip Hotels
Fri, April 10, 2009 - 5:22 PMI know about the remodeling, my company did them. However, you still have to consider that newer hotels are going to have bigger rooms and better facilities, including pool areas.
Now think about the shrinking difference between old hotel room rates and new hotel room rates. Why stay in an old hotel when for the same price you can stay in a new one? This will not always be the case, but it is right now.
Maybe you are really easy to please or particularly loyal (which is fine, the comfort factor counts), but I can't imagine someone staying at the Flamingo when so many other choices on the same part of strip are available for the same price.
